They are not a housing option of last resort and provide so many financial advantages to working families and seniors. However, when it comes to internet access—a modern necessity, they are often left behind.
Traditional internet providers frequently avoid these areas due to the perceived low return on investment, difficulty deploying, having to deal with private land ownership, etc. If broadband does exist, it’s largely very old coaxial cable that is not upgraded and expensive. As a result, residents are left with unreliable connections, slower speeds, or, in some cases, no broadband access at all.
This puts so many MHC residents at a digital disadvantage. Broadband is the 4th needed utility to allow for remote work, search for work, education, and telehealth. Simply put, broadband internet is a home’s lifeblood. Park owners need to realize that the large internet providers are simply not going to invest in resources to improve parks because it’s a much longer time to realize return on investment.
Many small ISPs have realized this and are moving to fill in the gap that big telecom and cable companies do not. That is, the residents of MHCs are good consumers and loyal to brands that understand the unique nuances and respect MHC culture – it’s community first.
Park owners and MHC residential-owned Co-ops should start to understand that investing in better broadband is good for business but even better for communities. You’ll foster greater loyalty, limit turnover, and help attract new residents in need of better infrastructure.
Investing in better internet for mobile home parks isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Manufactured Housing Communities deserve the same digital opportunities as any neighborhood, and closing the gap brings economic, educational, and social benefits to millions of Americans. It’s good for all of us.
